Most "how to earn cashback" guides tell you to click a link before you shop and collect 1–2%. That's true, and it's the smallest part of the answer. My account has earned £1,636.17 since November 2023, and when I break it down by where the money came from, everyday shopping is nowhere near the top. Here are the six streams, ranked by how much they actually paid me, with the receipt for each — and the order I'd set them up if I were starting today.

Disclosure: cashback links here are my referral links — free for you (you get a sign-up bonus), and they fund the testing.
First, the one-minute mechanics
Cashback sites earn a commission when they send you to a retailer, and hand most of it to you. So: start on the cashback site → click through → buy as normal. The cashback appears as pending, becomes confirmed when the retailer verifies the sale, then payable — at which point you withdraw it to your bank, PayPal or a gift card. Prices are the same either way; the click is the only difference. (Full walkthrough with my purchases in how TopCashback works.)
Stream 1 — Referrals: £835 (over half my total)
The single biggest number in my account is money for showing friends a link. TopCashback pays existing members a bonus (currently £25) when someone joins through their link and earns their first £10 — and the friend gets £10 too. Thirty-three sign-ups later that's £835 earned, ~£295 more pending.

It costs nothing, the friend genuinely benefits, and the bonuses arrive in clusters whenever a few people join. My exact method — who to tell, what to say, what not to do — is in the referral playbook.
Stream 2 — Switch bounties: £270+ for things I had to do anyway
Flat bounties for switching a service dwarf percentage cashback:
| Switch | Bounty |
|---|---|
| Mobile network → Three | £120 |
| Business payments sign-up (GoCardless) | £85 |
| Car insurance via TopCashback Compare | £45 |
| Energy switch (British Gas → Fuse) via Compare | £22 (pending) |

I was renewing that mobile contract and that insurance regardless. Routing the renewal through cashback turned a chore into £165. Details in the Three and TopCashback Compare guides.
Stream 3 — 100%+ offers: getting paid to buy things
Retailers periodically offer cashback equal to or above the price to win new customers — usually on subscriptions. My hits:
- McAfee antivirus: paid £89.23, got £89.23 back (100%).
- Private Internet Access VPN: paid £42.62, got £42.51 (99.7%).
- Gousto: paid £18.50, got £20 (108% — it paid me to eat).
- HelloFresh: £26.15 → £25 (96%). Abel & Cole: £12.25 → £12.

These rotate for days, not months, so I track them on Bounty Watch. Rules: new customer only, no unofficial codes, buy in the same session. My VPN guide has the two declines that taught me those rules.
Stream 4 — Stacking codes with cashback on real shopping
When you do shop, stack the retailer's own discount with cashback — they're separate mechanisms and don't cancel each other:
- Ernest Jones: £958.33 order → £124.58 back (13%) — my biggest single line.
- New Look: 25% welcome offer at the till, then 20% cashback → £12.48 on £62.39.
- Glasses Direct: 40%-off code, then 15% cashback → £11.79 on £78.60.
The category decides the rate — jewellery and hotels pay 8–13%, electronics 1–3% — so on anything big I check the rate before choosing where to buy.
Stream 5 — Gift cards: the boring 2–6% on spending you can't avoid
Buying a retailer gift card through the cashback site's gift-card shop pays a few percent, then you spend it in store. My account has ~30 TopGiftCards lines — small each, but on Primark, Adidas and supermarkets it's cashback on shopping that otherwise earns nothing. Gift card guide here.
Stream 6 — Bills and business spend
Anything recurring that has a cashback listing: my Meta Ads spend for work tracked £23.42 on ~£394 in August; hotel bookings via Expedia paid 11%. If you're self-employed, audit your software and ad spend — several tools pay bounties (see the August diary).
The order I'd set it up today
- Join one main site (mine's TopCashback — join here, £10 bonus) and switch on the browser reminder so you never forget to click through.
- Route this month's unavoidable bills through it: any switch, renewal or subscription due. That's the fastest £50–£150.
- Tell three friends who'd actually use it — the referral stream starts.
- Set a rule for shopping: anything over £50, check the rate (and Quidco's) before buying; stack the retailer's own code.
- Check Bounty Watch weekly for 100% offers on things you'd try anyway.
- Withdraw regularly — cashback isn't a bank; move confirmed money out.
Realistic expectation: I average about £48 a month with modest effort. Heavy spenders and switchers do far more; the point is that most of mine came from steps 2 and 3, not from shopping harder.
FAQ — real questions people ask Google
How do you get your cashback? Once a transaction confirms and turns "payable", you withdraw it from the cashback site to your bank account, PayPal, or a gift card (often with a bonus). My withdrawals have ranged from a few pounds to £216.20 in one go.
How to earn free cash back? The genuinely free streams are referrals (a bonus for each friend who joins and earns £10), sign-up bonuses (my first was £15), and bounties on switches you'd make anyway. None require spending more than you already do.
Can you still get cash back at supermarkets? Yes — via cashback-site gift cards (a few percent on Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons etc.), first-order bonuses on online grocery (my Asda order paid £9.43 on £42), and card-linked apps that pay on in-store spend.
How can I earn money using cashback? Beyond clicking through for shopping: refer friends, route every switch and renewal through a cashback site, catch 100% offers on subscriptions, stack codes with cashback on big purchases, and buy gift cards for in-store spend. That mix is exactly how my £1,636 breaks down.

New to TopCashback? You get £10 too.
Join through my link and TopCashback adds a £10 bonus once you've earned £10 in cashback — on shopping you'd do anyway. Free to join; new-member terms apply, and it's how this site keeps testing.
