My single biggest cashback win didn't come from a clever bounty or a 100% offer. It came from a purchase I'd have made anyway: £958.33 at Ernest Jones, clicked through TopCashback, which paid back £124.58 — a 13% rate on jewellery. That one line funded a lot of the small experiments on this site. Here's how it happened, what Ernest Jones pays today, and — because the lesson is bigger than one shop — what £5,061 of big-ticket purchases actually returned across my account.

Ernest Jones: £958.33 paid, £124.58 cashback claimed (Aug 2024) — my biggest single line

Jewellery is one of the few categories where cashback rates are consistently high, because margins are. Ten percent standard, 13% when boosted — on a four-figure purchase that's the price of a decent weekend away.

The stack for a £1,000 piece today: sign-up 10% code (→ £900), then 10% cashback on the £900 (→ £90 back). Blue Light holders can do better: 20% off, then cashback on top. Use one code; obscure third-party codes are the classic reason big-ticket cashback declines.

What £5,061 of big purchases actually returned

The most useful table on this site for anyone about to spend real money — every purchase over £200 in my account:

Purchase Paid Cashback Rate
Ernest Jones (jewellery) £958.33 £124.58 13.0%
TopCashback Compare (car insurance) £1,260.63 £45.00 flat bounty
Argos (electronics) £1,199.00 £35.97 3.0%
Expedia (hotel) £247.21 £27.19 11.0%
Currys (electronics) £1,165.83 £11.66 1.0%
Kiwi.com (flights) £230.26 £7.24 3.1%
Total £5,061.26 £251.64 5.0%

Three things jump out:

  1. Category beats amount. Jewellery and hotels paid 11–13%; electronics paid 1–3%. My Currys order was bigger than my Ernest Jones one and returned a tenth as much — the Currys guide explains the category table.
  2. Flat bounties love expensive purchases. The £45 insurance bounty is the same whether your premium is £300 or £1,260 — see TopCashback Compare.
  3. 5% blended is the honest number. Not 15%, not "up to". Five percent of everything big I bought in three years came back — about £250 for the habit of clicking a link first.
Argos: £1,199 → £35.97, with the customary duplicate 'declined' line beside it

Protecting a big-ticket tracking

Larger orders are where a decline hurts, so I'm strict:

  • Click through from the cashback site and pay in that session.
  • No unofficial codes; only the retailer's own or the one shown on the cashback page.
  • Don't pay with gift cards unless the listing says they're allowed — a common silent killer for high-value orders.
  • Screenshot the confirmation; if nothing tracks in 7 days, file a claim with the order number (process in my missing-cashback guide).
  • Expect a long pending period on expensive items — retailers wait out returns windows. Every purchase above tracked and paid.

FAQ — real questions people ask Google

Is there a 10% discount code available for Ernest Jones? Yes — signing up to Ernest Jones emails gets 10% off your next order, and the SHINE code gives an extra 15% on selected already-reduced pieces. Stack either with cashback (up to 10%) by clicking through a cashback site first.

Does Ernest Jones give a Blue Light discount? Yes: Blue Light Card members get 20% off full-price jewellery and watches at Ernest Jones, online and in store, plus 4% via the Blue Light shopping card. Add cashback on top for an online order.

All figures are from my own TopCashback account (screenshots shown), verified 8 September 2026; the 13% Ernest Jones rate was a boosted window (standard is up to 10%).
