I Get Paid to Buy VPNs: The 100–120% Cashback Windows

Somewhere in the pricing departments of the VPN industry, it was decided that new customers are worth more than a year of subscription fees. The result is the strangest corner of cashback: VPN deals that pay back 100–120% of what you spend. Buy a VPN year, receive a VPN year's money — sometimes more.

I've run this play three times. Here's the honest scoreboard, because it did not go three-for-three:

What's live right now (and why it rotates)

As I write, TopCashback's VPN category advertises fourteen offers at 100% cashback or more — in recent days I've screenshotted CyberGhost, ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access at 120%, FastestVPN at up to 100%, with the household names (NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton) sitting at ~40%.

And here's the multi-platform kicker: Quidco currently lists NordVPN at 100% — more than double TopCashback's Nord rate — stacked on a 75%-off promo. Same VPN, different door, wildly different payout. Why do VPNs do this? Subscription economics: most people renew at full price after year one, so the industry happily hands the first year's revenue to whoever delivers the customer. For once, that's you.

How to actually get paid (learned the £86 way)

My two declines taught me more than my win. The rules:

1. New-customer means new. Same email, same payment card, same household plan as a previous trial? That's how declines happen. Use a genuinely fresh relationship with the merchant.
2. The percentage applies to the qualifying plan — offers are usually built around a specific 1- or 2-year package. Upgrading, downgrading, or adding extras at checkout can void the rate. Buy exactly the advertised thing.
3. No stacking with external discount codes unless the cashback page itself lists them. A coupon from elsewhere is the classic tracking-killer.
4. Clean click-through — no ad-blocker interference, complete checkout in the same session.
5. Expect the pending period — my PIA payout confirmed and paid, but VPN confirmations run weeks-to-months. If it declines and you believe you qualified, file the claim — merchants do reverse decisions.

Do all five and the odds move well past my early 1-in-3 — my declines both trace back to rules 1 and 2 before I knew them.

Is this how you get a "free VPN"?

Better. Free VPNs ration your data, throttle speeds, and monetise you in ways a privacy product really shouldn't. The cashback route gets you a full premium VPN — the thing the free tiers are advertising for — with the cost refunded. My PIA year cost 11 pence. That's not a free VPN; that's a paid VPN that paid for itself.

Does VPN cashback actually pay out? Mine did — £42.51 of £42.62 back on Private Internet Access, claimed and withdrawn. But my other two attempts were declined by the merchants, so treat the terms (genuinely new customer, exact qualifying plan) as law, not suggestion.

Why is VPN cashback so high? Renewal economics: VPNs expect to keep you beyond year one at full price, so they'll spend the entire first year's fee acquiring you. 100–120% offers are customer-acquisition budgets with your name on them.

Which VPN has the best cashback right now? It rotates weekly across TopCashback and Quidco — recent windows: 120% on CyberGhost/Express/PIA (TopCashback) and 100% on NordVPN (Quidco). Check both before buying; the gap between platforms on the same VPN can be 60 points.

Can you stack VPN discount codes with cashback? Only codes shown on the cashback page itself. External coupons are the most common reason VPN cashback declines — one of my £86 of lessons.
