Every explanation of cashback sites sounds vaguely like a scam until you watch one real purchase go through. So instead of diagrams, this guide follows my actual Gousto order from August 2026 through the machine, start to finish — then shows you the four purchase types that behave differently.

Disclosure: affiliate links fund the testing.

The machine, in one real purchase

What I did: logged into TopCashback → searched "Gousto" → hit "Get Cashback", which bounced me to gousto.co.uk with a tracking reference attached → ordered my box (£18.50) exactly as any customer would.

What the machine did: Gousto's affiliate system logged that TopCashback sent me. Within hours my TopCashback account showed the purchase as pending. Four days later it flipped to confirmed: £20.00 (I'd caught an elevated new-customer window — that story's here). Once payable, it joins a withdrawal to my bank.

Where the money comes from — the bit that makes people suspicious: Gousto pays TopCashback a marketing commission for delivering a customer, exactly as it pays Google for ads. TopCashback hands most of that commission to me and keeps a slice. Nobody prints money; the advertising budget just changed direction. That's the entire business model — and it's why using the site is free.

The three rules that make tracking work

My 123 purchases have tracked 123 times. The habits behind that streak:

  1. Start every purchase from TopCashback — search the retailer there, click through, buy in that same session. The click is the contract; there's no claiming cashback on a purchase you made before clicking.
  2. Don't sabotage the tracker mid-purchase — no hopping to coupon sites for codes (only codes shown on the cashback page are safe), no ad-blocker fights, no finishing the order tomorrow on another device.
  3. Let the statuses do their thing — pending means logged, confirmed means the retailer accepted it, payable means withdrawable. Speeds vary wildly by category — my real range is 4 days to 26 weeks.

The four kinds of purchase (and how each behaves)

  • Percentage retail — the everyday stuff: 1–13% at thousands of shops. My best: £124.58 on one jewellery order. Tracks fast, confirms in weeks.
  • Flat bounties — fixed sums for switches and sign-ups regardless of spend: my £120 from Three, £22 for an energy switch, £12.60 on a £3.68 eSIM. The biggest money, the slowest confirmations.
  • 100%+ windows — rotating offers where cashback exceeds the price: VPNs, meal boxes, antivirus. Time-limited by design.
  • Gift-card plays — buying discounted spending money and boosting your payouts: the two tricks explained.

Learn the four shapes and the whole platform stops looking like clutter — every offer is one of these wearing different clothes.

Withdrawing: the last step people overcomplicate

When cashback turns payable, you withdraw manually: bank transfer, PayPal, or gift cards with a small bonus (my real bonus across 8 redemptions: 2–3%). My rhythm is monthly, my ~20 withdrawals have all arrived, and the community consensus matches my experience — bank transfers land in days.

FAQ — real questions people ask Google

How does TopCashback in the UK work? Click from TopCashback to a retailer → buy as normal → the retailer pays TopCashback a commission for the referral → most of it becomes your cashback, withdrawable once confirmed. My Gousto order above is the whole lifecycle in one receipt.

How does TopCashback make money? It keeps a slice of the retailer commissions it collects, plus optional Plus subscriptions (£5/yr) and some on-site advertising. You are the delivered customer — the rare case where being the product pays you.

Does TopCashback actually work? 123 of my 123 genuine purchases have tracked, £1,547.12 has reached my bank. It works mechanically; the review covers how well it works financially.

Can you claim cashback after purchase on TopCashback? Only if you clicked through TopCashback before buying and the tracking failed — that's a missing-cashback claim, typically within ~100 days. No click first, no claim — the click is what retailers pay for.
