Gousto vs HelloFresh: I Did Both Through Cashback — One Paid Me to Eat, One Cost £1.15

I've now ordered a first box from both of the UK's big meal-kit services, both through TopCashback, ten days apart. The receipts: Gousto cost £18.50 and paid £20 cashback — it paid me £1.50 to eat for a week. HelloFresh cost £26.15 and paid £25 — a week of dinners for £1.15. That's the cashback half of the comparison settled. The food half is where MoneySavingExpert, Reddit and I diverge a little — here's the full picture.

Which is better value?

Two honest answers depending on what "value" means to you:

• Per serving, Gousto is cheaper — MSE's April 2026 comparison has it winning on price per portion, and my first box was a third cheaper than HelloFresh's.
• Per stomach, HelloFresh's portions are bigger, which is why MSE describes paying "that bit more" for HelloFresh as better value if you're feeding hungry adults.

Add the cashback and the first-box maths flips to Gousto (it went negative), but HelloFresh's bigger headline cashback (£25) and bigger portions make its first box the more generous meal. Do both — they're separate new-customer offers — and you've eaten for a fortnight for less than two quid.

Which is healthier?

Both publish nutrition per recipe and offer "balanced"/"lean" recipe filters; neither is inherently healthier — the recipe you pick is. Gousto's larger menu gives more low-calorie and plant-based choices per week; HelloFresh's "Calorie Smart" tag does the same job with fewer options. Either lets you eat healthier than a default takeaway week, which is most people's real comparison.

Which is better food?

The reviewer consensus leans Gousto: Katykicker's long-running UK comparison crowned it for fewer quality issues, and the Reddit r/CasualUK thread's top answer is "Gousto is better food than HelloFresh in our experience", with a nod to recipes being easier to recreate afterwards. HelloFresh fans counter with portion size and more familiar dishes. Neither has a quality problem — it's preference.

4. Set a reminder to pause or skip before box two — both roll on at full price otherwise, and full price is where meal kits get expensive.

FAQ — real questions people ask Google

Which is better value, Gousto or HelloFresh? Gousto per serving (cheaper, and my first box was cashback-positive); HelloFresh per portion (bigger plates, which MSE rates better value at the higher price). For a first box, both are near-free with cashback — do both.

Is Gousto or HelloFresh healthier? Neither by default — both offer calorie-controlled and plant-based recipe filters with full nutrition per dish. Gousto's bigger weekly menu gives more healthy options to choose from.
