Sixty-eight thousand people in the UK search "free VPN" every month, and most of the answers are either a free app that will quietly sell what you do online, or a "trial" that charges you on day eight. There are honest ways to run a VPN in the UK for nothing or next to nothing — I've used one that literally paid me back 99.7% of the price — but each route has a catch, and the catches are what nobody explains. Route 1: VPNs that are actually free — and what "free" costs you

Proton VPN Free — the one exception worth knowing

Proton (the Swiss company behind Proton Mail) runs the only mainstream free VPN with no data cap, no speed cap on paper, no ads and no activity logs. Its own support pages confirm all users — including Free — get unlimited bandwidth and data. What you give up against the paid plan: you can't choose your country (the free tier auto-connects you to a server in a handful of free locations), you get one device, no streaming unblocking, no P2P, and speeds drop when the free servers are busy. The paid plan is 20,000+ servers in 140+ countries on up to 10 devices. For "I want my coffee-shop Wi-Fi encrypted", Proton Free is the honest answer. For "I want to watch UK TV abroad", it isn't.

Windscribe Free — 10 GB a month, pick your country

Windscribe gives 10 GB a month if you confirm an email, 2 GB if you don't, across about ten country servers, on unlimited devices, with no card. Ten gigabytes is browsing and email, not streaming — but you can choose the country, which Proton Free won't let you do. TunnelBear's free tier is 2 GB a month with unlimited connections; fine as a test, useless as a daily tool.

Everything else labelled "free VPN" — read this before installing

The 2016 CSIRO study of 283 Android VPN apps is still the reference point: 75% of the free VPN apps contained at least one third-party tracking library, and secondary analyses of the same dataset put the share carrying malware at around 38%. The business model is the giveaway — a VPN costs real money to run (servers, bandwidth), so a free one with no paid tier is funded by ads, by selling browsing data, or by renting your connection out as an exit node. The symptoms: data caps and throttling, injected ads, no kill switch (your real IP leaks the moment the tunnel drops), DNS leaks, logging despite the "no logs" badge, and apps that vanish from the store after a scandal. Browser "VPNs" (Opera's built-in one, most Chrome extensions like Urban VPN) are proxies for that browser tab only — your other apps aren't protected, and the provider sees everything you do in that tab.

Rule: if a free VPN has no paid plan at all, assume you are the product. If it has a paid plan and a public no-logs audit (Proton, Windscribe), the free tier is a marketing cost, not a data-harvesting operation.

Three pain points that catch people every week:

1. "Free trial" means "auto-charge on day 8". Surfshark is upfront about it; the app-store trials at other brands are the same. Set a phone reminder for day 6.
2. Refunds are for first-time customers, bought through the website. Buy through the App Store or Google Play and the VPN company can't refund you — Apple or Google decides.
3. The guarantee is not a subscription pause. You pay the full 1- or 2-year price up front (£40–£90), then claim it back. Budget for the cash flow.

Route 4: VPN discount codes — what "86% off" actually means

The discount-code pages for VPNs are the most misleading corner of coupon sites, because VPN list prices are fiction. The "monthly price" is £10–£13; almost nobody pays it. The 2-year plan is where every provider wants you, and its headline "75–86% off" is simply the 2-year price expressed against the monthly one. So a code rarely gets you more than the deal already on the pricing page — it gets you the same deal with an extra month or three bolted on. Here's what's real right now:

Two traps:

• Renewal. The intro price is for the first term only. A £2.29/month "2-year" Nord or Surfshark plan renews at the standard annual rate, often three to five times higher. Turn off auto-renew the day you buy, or diarise the renewal date.
• Codes kill cashback. If you're going to use route 5, an external coupon is the single most common reason a VPN cashback claim is declined. Cashback listings show the codes they allow; anything else is a gamble.

Route 5: the cashback route — a premium VPN that pays for itself

This is the part I can show receipts for. Cashback sites pay you a slice of the commission a VPN pays them for a new customer — and because VPNs expect to keep you at renewal, that commission is often the entire first-year price. As of 11 September 2026, TopCashback's live rates were:

Both declines trace back to rules I didn't know then. The rules:

1. New customer means new — new email, new payment method, no previous trial with that provider. Same household on a previous plan is how declines happen.
2. Buy exactly the qualifying plan the listing names (usually a specific 1- or 2-year package). Upgrading, adding extras or switching term at checkout can void the rate.
3. No external discount codes. Only codes shown on the cashback listing.
4. Click through with a clean session — no ad-blocker interference, complete the purchase in the same browser session, on the website not the app.
5. Expect a wait. VPN cashback sits pending for weeks (the merchant waits out its own refund window). If it's declined and you followed the rules, file a missing-cashback claim — merchants do reverse decisions.

Combining routes: what actually stacks

• Cashback + the provider's own pricing-page deal: yes — the 2-year price is not a code, so 99% cashback applies to it.
• Cashback + coupon-site or student code: no, unless the code is on the listing. On a £50 plan, a 99% cashback rate (£49.50 back) beats any extra "3 months free".
• Cashback + money-back guarantee: don't. Refund the plan and the cashback is declined; keep the plan and the cashback pays. Pick one.
• Student code vs cashback (students only): UNiDAYS/Student Beans give Nord ~77–78% + 3 months; TopCashback gives 99% back on the standard 2-year price. Cashback wins on money; the student code wins on simplicity. More student maths in my international-student guide.

Is a VPN legal in the UK? (and the streaming small print)

Yes. The government's own explainer on the Online Safety Act (1 August 2025) states plainly that VPNs are legal in the UK. What changed in 2025 is that age-verification rules pushed VPN sign-ups up sharply, and Ofcom has said it is monitoring VPN use as a way around those checks — monitoring, not banning. Using a VPN doesn't make anything illegal legal, and there are three practical limits:

• Streaming services' terms. Netflix, Disney+ and others block known VPN IP ranges; using one may breach their terms (an account warning or a blocked stream, not a criminal matter). BBC iPlayer abroad additionally requires you to hold a UK TV licence.
• Banking and work apps may flag or block logins from VPN IPs.
• Free tiers are the worst at streaming — the IP ranges are the first to be blocked. If unblocking TV is the goal, only a paid plan does it reliably, which is where route 5 earns its keep.

Device-by-device: the honest answers

• iPhone / Android: don't install a random "free VPN" from the store — that's the CSIRO 75% problem. Proton VPN Free is on both stores with no card; Surfshark's 7-day trial is app-only.

FAQ — real questions people ask Google

Is there a 100% free VPN? Yes: Proton VPN Free has no data cap, no ads and no logs, with limits on server choice, devices and streaming. Windscribe Free gives 10 GB a month with country choice. Almost every other "100% free" app is funded by tracking or ads.

Is there a free VPN for the UK? Proton Free and Windscribe Free both work from the UK. If you need a UK server while abroad (for iPlayer), free tiers rarely provide one that streaming services haven't blocked — that's a paid-plan job, which cashback can make free.

Is free VPN actually free? Is there any trustworthy free VPN? Proton and Windscribe are trustworthy because their free tiers are marketing for paid plans and both publish independent audits. What are the risks of using a free VPN? Tracking libraries and malware in the app, logging of your browsing, data caps and throttling, no kill switch (IP leaks), DNS leaks, injected ads, and in the worst cases your connection being sold as an exit node. Stick to free tiers from audited paid providers.

Can hackers get through a VPN? A VPN encrypts traffic between you and the VPN server; it doesn't stop phishing, malware you install, or a compromised VPN provider. A free app with malware in it is the hacker — which is the whole point of avoiding unknown free VPNs.
