Sixty thousand people a month search for Fuse Energy, and the reviews split oddly: a 4.8 Trustpilot score from 11,000+ customers, and a three-star "satisfactory" from Which? for customer service in the same summer. I can add a data point. On 2 September I switched my gas and electricity from British Gas to Fuse — because the tariff was cheaper — and I did it through TopCashback Compare Energy, which added £22 cashback for the same five-minute form. Here's what Fuse actually is, why it's cheap, what the internet's arguing about, and how to make the switch pay you.

What Fuse Energy is
Fuse is a UK gas and electricity supplier launched in 2022 by former Revolut executives — which explains the fintech feel: an app-first supplier that promises "easy savings, easier support, 24 hours a day". Its pitch, from its own site:
- Variable tariffs that beat the price cap — "always cheaper than major UK suppliers".
- Fixed tariffs billed as among the UK's cheapest.
- Multi-rate tariffs where you customise peak/off-peak windows (aimed at EV and heat-pump households).
- An app with bill forecasts updated every 30 minutes, an AI assistant ("Plugs"), EV-charger integration, and sign-up "in under 3 minutes" by uploading an old bill.
Why is Fuse Energy so cheap?
Three structural reasons, none of them a catch in themselves:
- Lean, app-first operations — no call-centre estate, digital-first support — lower costs passed into tariffs and, notably, a lower standing charge, which is what MSE forum users repeatedly cite as the reason they moved.
- Growth pricing. A young supplier buys market share by undercutting the cap; Fuse's marketing headline is "switch and save up to £200".
- Fixed deals below the cap when wholesale prices allow — the kind MoneySavingExpert and Uswitch have been recommending, which is why both names come up in that Reddit thread.
The sensible caution with any cheap young supplier is the one from the 2021–22 supplier collapses: if a supplier fails, Ofgem's Supplier of Last Resort process moves you and protects your credit balance, but you lose the tariff. Keep your credit balance sensible rather than hundreds in surplus.
The reviews, honestly weighed
| Source | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Trustpilot | 4.8 / 5 from 11,389 reviews — praise for quick, helpful support |
| Which? (July 2026 survey) | 3 stars for customer service — "satisfactory"; note no supplier scored five |
| MSE Forum | Mixed: long-term positives on standing charge and no issues; one "horrendous" thread in Jan 2026 |
| Reddit r/UKEnergyDeals | 380-comment "3 months in" thread — broadly positive on price and app, with billing gripes |
My read: Fuse is cheap and the app is good; support is fine for most people and inconsistent for some — typical of a fast-growing supplier. The people happiest with it are the ones who switched for price and rarely need to speak to anyone.
My switch: British Gas → Fuse, via TopCashback Compare
I was on British Gas and Fuse's rates were better. Rather than switch on Fuse's site directly, I used TopCashback Compare Energy — same comparison, same Fuse tariff, plus a £22 cashback bounty (Compare's energy bounties currently run up to £44). The switch itself was the standard process: I entered details once, Fuse handled the old-supplier side, and the cashback logged as pending in my account the same day.
[Tariff, monthly saving versus British Gas and first impressions of the app — being added after the first full bill.]
Why the Compare route matters: the tariff is identical whether you switch direct or via a comparison; only the Compare route pays a bounty. My previous attempts at "quote and get cashback" bounties on Confused.com and Compare the Market declined at £0 five times — TopCashback's own Compare has paid twice (£45 on car insurance, now £22 energy). The mechanics and the decline story are in my TopCashback Compare review.
Is Fuse better than Octopus?
Different strengths. Octopus is the customer-service benchmark (consistently top of Which? surveys) with smart tariffs like Agile and Go; Fuse is typically cheaper on standard variable and fixed tariffs, with a strong app and its own multi-rate option. If you never want to call anyone and want the lowest price, Fuse; if you want the best-rated support and smart tariffs, Octopus. Both appear in comparison results — pick on the tariff numbers for your usage.
Who should switch to Fuse (and who shouldn't)
- Switch if a Fuse tariff beats your current one on the comparison, you're comfortable with app-based support, and you'll keep the credit balance modest.
- Think twice if you value phone support above price, or you're on a supplier-specific smart tariff you rely on.
- Whatever you do, switch through a cashback comparison — £22–£44 for the same form.
FAQ — real questions people ask Google
Why is Fuse Energy so cheap? Lean, app-first operations (including a lower standing charge), growth pricing from a young supplier, and fixed deals set below the price cap when wholesale prices allow. It's a business model, not a trick — just keep credit balances sensible with any newer supplier.
What does Martin Lewis say about Fuse Energy? MoneySavingExpert has featured Fuse's below-cap fixed deals in its cheap-energy round-ups, which is why MSE (alongside Uswitch) is cited in user threads as recommending it. MSE's standing advice applies: compare on your own usage and check the exit fees on any fix.
Is Fuse better than Octopus? Fuse is usually cheaper on standard and fixed tariffs and has a strong app; Octopus leads on customer service ratings and smart tariffs. Choose on your priorities and the actual quotes.
Who owns Fuse Energy? Fuse Energy Supply Ltd, an independent UK supplier launched in 2022 by former Revolut executives — hence the fintech-style app and AI support.
