Car insurance is the one purchase almost every UK adult makes every year, and almost nobody gets paid for it. You can. My last renewal paid £45 cashback on a £1,260.63 policy — and I've also collected five £0 "declined" lines from comparison-site cashback deals that looked identical but weren't. This is every route to car insurance cashback, ranked by what actually landed in my account, with the small print that decides whether yours does.

Disclosure: TopCashback links are my referral links — free for you (you get a £10 bonus). No relationship with any insurer or comparison site.
Where the money comes from
MoneySavingExpert puts it plainly: when you buy insurance via a cashback site, the site earns a lead fee from the insurer for sending you. Cashback is that fee shared with you. Insurers spend heavily to acquire customers, so the fees — and therefore the bounties — are high: flat amounts of £25–£45, not percentages. On a cheap £300 policy that's up to 15% back.
Every route, ranked by what paid
| Route | Bounty | My result |
|---|---|---|
| TopCashback Compare — Car Insurance | £45 | Paid (£45 on £1,260.63) |
| Quidco Compare — Car Insurance | £45, "paid in 60 days" | Not used — same model as TCB Compare |
| Comparison-site listings via cashback (Compare the Market, Confused.com, GoCompare, MoneySuperMarket) | e.g. up to £25 for CTM via TopCashback | Declined ×5 (CTM ×2, Confused ×3, all £0) |
| Insurer-direct listings on cashback sites | varies by insurer | Not used |
| Cashback credit card for the premium | 0.5–1% | Stacks with any of the above |
1. TopCashback Compare / Quidco Compare (the ones that pay)
Both big cashback sites run their own comparison service: you fill the quote form inside the cashback site, choose a policy, buy — and the bounty is a single-layer transaction the cashback site controls. TopCashback's is £45; Quidco's is £45, paid within 60 days per its own listing — notably fast for insurance. That's the route my £45 came through: pending after purchase, confirmed once the cooling-off period passed, paid.
2. Comparison-site cashback deals (the ones that declined)
These are listings for Compare the Market, Confused.com, GoCompare or MoneySuperMarket on the cashback site — "get £X when you buy through them". Mine declined five times at £0. Why they fail more often:
- Two tracking layers (cashback site → comparison site → insurer): a break anywhere kills it.
- Strict conditions: buy through that comparison's link within a window; renewals and some insurers excluded; quotes without purchase pay nothing.
- Duplicate quotes create multiple lines that cancel.
They can pay — plenty of people report they do — but my hit rate is 0 for 5. The full decline decoder is in my TopCashback Compare review.
3. Insurer-direct listings
TopCashback's car-insurance category also lists insurers directly. Worth a glance if you already know who you're buying from — but the Compare bounty is usually larger and the conditions simpler.
4. Stack a cashback card
Whichever route, pay the premium on a cashback credit card (0.5–1%) and pay it off in full. On a £1,000 premium that's another £5–£10.
The renewal routine that gets paid
- Start early — quotes are typically cheapest 3–4 weeks before renewal.
- Compare via the cashback site's own Compare (TopCashback or Quidco), not via a comparison-site bounty.
- Buy in the same session, new policy (not a mid-term change), and don't cancel inside the cooling-off period — that voids the bounty.
- Screenshot the confirmation; expect pending → confirmed after the cooling-off window.
- Do it every year. £45 annually, for a form you were filling in anyway.
Same logic applies to home, pet, van and travel insurance — TopCashback Compare pays £27–£207 across them. See the Compare review for the full table.
FAQ — real questions people ask Google
Can you get cashback on car insurance? Yes. TopCashback Compare and Quidco Compare each pay £45 when you buy a policy through their comparison; comparison sites like Compare the Market also appear on cashback sites with smaller bounties. My renewal paid £45.
What did Martin Lewis say about car insurance? MoneySavingExpert's core advice: quote 3–4 weeks before renewal, compare on several sites, and use cashback sites knowing they earn a lead fee from the insurer — which is what funds your bounty.
Can I get cashback on insurance? On most kinds: car (£45), home (£35), pet (£27), van (£38), motorbike (£26) and travel (up to £207) through TopCashback Compare, with Quidco Compare offering similar. Insurers' own sites don't pay you; the cashback route does.
Why is Aviva Zero so cheap? Aviva Zero is Aviva's online-only, app-managed brand with a low-cost model and usage-linked pricing — cheaper to run, so cheaper to buy. It appears in comparison results like any insurer, so the cashback bounty applies if you buy it through the cashback site's Compare.
