"Cashback app" now means three completely different things, and the best one for you depends on which you mean. There are click-through apps (the big cashback sites in app form), instant gift-card apps (cashback in seconds, spent in store), and card-linked apps (link a card, forget about it). I've earned £1,636 through the first kind; the others I've researched properly and I'll tell you where they beat it.

Disclosure: TopCashback links are my referral links (you get a £10 bonus). No relationship with any other app.

JamDoughnut Instant gift card Seconds App balance → spend In-store: coffee, DIY, fashion; £5 first-purchase bonus
Cheddar Instant gift card Seconds Bank from £5, no fees Tesco & everyday shops; FCA-regulated
EverUp Gift card + points Instant points Points → rewards Supermarket gift cards, if you like a prize draw
Airtime Rewards Card-linked Automatic Mobile-bill credit Zero-effort rewards at partner shops

Click-through apps: the biggest money

TopCashback app

The app version of the UK's largest cashback site (5,500+ retailers; 5.0 from 30,000+ Google Play ratings). Everything I've written about on this site came through TopCashback: £120 bounties for switching, 100% offers on subscriptions, 13% on jewellery, £835 in referrals. The app adds a cashback reminder and in-app browsing so you don't forget the click. Slowest to pay of the three types — weeks to months — but the ceiling is nowhere near the others. Quidco app

Same model, 5,000+ retailers, plus vouchers and its Compare service in-app. Rates flip against TopCashback per retailer, so the two apps together are the serious shopper's setup. Its Premium (£1/month, only when you earn) adds a 10% top-up. (Quidco vs TopCashback)

Instant gift-card apps: cashback in seconds, mostly in store

The mechanism: pick the shop you're about to spend in, buy a digital gift card in the app for the amount you need, get cashback credited immediately, then pay with the card at the till or online. No tracking cookies, no waiting, nothing to decline — the trade-off is committing money to a specific shop first.

JamDoughnut

Up to 20% on promotions, with everyday rates like Costa 10%, The Body Shop 9%, Moss 8%, B&Q 5.5%, and a £5 bonus on your first purchase. Works online and in store; there's even a daily 1pm live giveaway in the app. Best-in-class for turning a coffee habit into a few pounds a month. Researched, not personally used.

Cheddar

Positioned around Tesco (up to 5%) and 100–200+ retailers including Nike, "up to 15%" headline. Two things stand out: cash out to your actual bank from £5 with zero fees, and it's FCA-regulated with a British Bank Award — reassuring for an app you pre-load. 250,000+ users, 4.7 on the App Store. Researched only.

EverUp

Gift cards earn Cashback Points and coins, redeemable for rewards, with a gamified prize element. Scrimpr rates it best for supermarket gift cards. If you want cash rather than points-with-odds, JamDoughnut or Cheddar are cleaner. Researched only.

Card-linked: Airtime Rewards

Link your debit/credit cards once; when you spend at partner retailers, rewards accrue automatically and are redeemed as credit against your mobile phone bill. No clicking, no gift cards — the only truly zero-effort option, which is why Scrimpr names it the best card-linked app. Rates are modest and limited to partner brands. Researched only.

Which app gives the most cashback?

For total pounds: a click-through app, and specifically TopCashback (MSE found it pays the highest rate in over 70% of checks; my account backs that with £1,636 earned). For speed and in-store: JamDoughnut or Cheddar. For effort: Airtime Rewards. Most people are best served by one click-through app plus one instant app — TopCashback for online shopping, switches and big purchases; JamDoughnut or Cheddar for the coffee-and-Tesco layer.

Do cashback apps actually work?

In my experience, yes — with the caveat that the click-through kind requires you to follow the rules (click first, no unofficial codes, same session). Across 123 TopCashback transactions the tracking has never missed a genuine purchase; I've withdrawn £1,547.12 to my bank. Instant gift-card apps remove even that risk because the cashback is credited before you shop. What none of them do is make buying things you don't need a good idea.

FAQ — real questions people ask Google

Which is the best app for getting cashback? TopCashback for the most money overall (highest rates in most checks, bounties, 100% offers); JamDoughnut or Cheddar if you want instant cashback for in-store spending; Airtime Rewards if you want zero effort.

What is the best cashback site in the UK? TopCashback, by MSE's rate checks and by my own £1,547 withdrawn — with Quidco as the essential second account for rate-checking. Full ranking in best cashback sites UK.

Do cashback apps actually work? Yes. Click-through apps pay weeks after purchase once the retailer confirms (mine has paid ~20 times); instant gift-card apps credit cashback in seconds before you spend. Failures come from broken tracking rules, not from the apps being fake.

What are the best cash-back apps? Click-through: TopCashback, Quidco. Instant gift card: JamDoughnut, Cheddar, EverUp. Card-linked: Airtime Rewards. Pick one from the first group and one from the second for the best coverage.
