"Tesco cashback" is the most-searched supermarket cashback term in the UK, and half the people typing it mean something different from the other half. Some want cash at the till — the old "cashback with your shopping" — and Tesco's own staff on Reddit admit it's a coin-flip whether a given store still does it. The other half want money back on the shop itself, and that's real, consistent, and worth around 3–5% on every supermarket trip if you use the right route. This guide covers both, for Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Asda and Waitrose, with rates checked today.

Disclosure: cashback links here are my referral links — free for you (you get a £10 bonus). No relationship with any supermarket or app.

Meaning 1: cash at the till

Asking for £20 cashback with your card payment used to be universal. Now it's patchy: many stores have limited or dropped it as card payments rose and cash handling fell. Tesco staff describe store-by-store inconsistency; Sainsbury's and Morrisons similar. If you need cash, the reliable options are a free-to-use ATM or the Post Office. This page is about the other meaning.

Meaning 2: money back on your supermarket shop — the routes

Route How it works Typical rate
Cashback-site grocery listings (TopCashback, Quidco) Click through for an online grocery order Ongoing 2–3%; new-customer bonuses up to £10
Gift cards via cashback sites (TopGiftCards etc.) Buy a supermarket e-gift card, earn cashback on it, spend in store or online ~2–6% depending on retailer and day
Instant gift-card apps (Cheddar, JamDoughnut, everup) Buy the card in-app, cashback credited instantly, scan at till Tesco 4.5% (Cheddar), Morrisons 5% (everup)
Card-linked apps (tuck., Airtime Rewards) Link a bank card; earn automatically at partner supermarkets Tesco up to 4% (tuck.)
Loyalty schemes (Clubcard, Nectar, Asda Rewards) Points/vouchers on top Fractions of a percent — stack, don't rely on

The gift-card and instant-app routes are the ones that work for a weekly in-store shop; the cashback-site listings are for online delivery orders and first-order bonuses.

Supermarket by supermarket

Tesco

  • Online grocery, new customer: TopCashback lists up to £10 for a first Tesco Groceries order; Quidco shows up to 3.2% / £4.80 ongoing (it warns it can take up to 8 months to pay — grocery cashback is slow).
  • In store: buy a Tesco gift card through Cheddar (4.5%) and pay with it at the till; or link a card to tuck. (up to 4%) and earn automatically.
  • Clubcard points stack on top of both.
  • The "does Tesco offer 20% off gift cards" question refers to occasional Clubcard/partner promotions, not a standing deal.

Sainsbury's

  • In store: a Sainsbury's e-gift card via TopCashback's TopGiftCards has historically paid among the highest supermarket rates (users have reported ~5–6%); check the live rate on the day — it moves.
  • Nectar points stack with gift-card cashback, which is the classic Sainsbury's "stack" people discuss on Reddit.
  • Online: watch for new-customer grocery bonuses on the cashback sites.

Morrisons

  • Morrisons ended cashback on gift-card purchases through some routes, so older guides quoting 6.5% are out of date. Today: everup pays 5% on Morrisons gift cards (as points/coins) and Freecash around 1.9%, in-store only. More Card points on top.

Asda

Waitrose

  • Gift-card cashback available via the usual gift-card routes; check live rates.

My honest position

My supermarket receipts so far are Asda (the £9.43 first order) and a stack of gift-card lines in my TopCashback account — small percentages on shopping I'd do anyway, which is exactly what supermarket cashback is: a few percent, forever, on the biggest recurring bill most households have. At £100 a week, 4% is £200 a year. I'm adding Tesco and Sainsbury's gift-card receipts to this page as I run them.

The routine

  1. Weekly shop: buy the gift card for your supermarket in the app with the best live rate (Cheddar/TopGiftCards/everup) before you shop; scan it at the till; keep collecting Clubcard/Nectar.
  2. First online order at any supermarket you haven't used: go via TopCashback or Quidco for the new-customer bonus.
  3. Link one card-linked app (tuck./Airtime) for the trips you forget.
  4. Withdraw — gift-card apps are for spending; cashback-site balances go to your bank.

FAQ — real questions people ask Google

Can you get cash back at Tesco? Cash at the till is store-dependent and increasingly rare. Money back on your shopping is reliable: a Tesco gift card via Cheddar pays 4.5%, tuck. pays up to 4% card-linked, and TopCashback offers up to £10 for a first online grocery order.

Can I get cashback at a Tesco till? Some stores still offer cash with a card payment, many don't — staff report it varies daily. For guaranteed savings use the gift-card or card-linked routes above rather than the till.

Can you still get cash back at Sainsbury's? At the till: patchy, like Tesco. On your shopping: yes — Sainsbury's gift cards via TopGiftCards have paid some of the best supermarket rates, stacked with Nectar points.

Can you get cashback from Morrisons? Yes, but less than before: everup pays 5% on Morrisons gift cards and Freecash about 1.9%, in store; some earlier gift-card cashback routes have ended.

Do you get cashback with gift cards? Yes — that's the main supermarket route: buy the supermarket's gift card through a cashback site or instant app, earn 2–6% on the card, spend it like cash. Loyalty points still apply.

Does Tesco offer 20% off gift cards? Not as a standing offer; occasional Clubcard or partner promotions discount specific third-party gift cards. Everyday savings come from cashback on Tesco gift cards (4.5%) rather than discounts on them.
