Search "experian" on TopCashback and two offers come back from the same company. One pays £9 for opening an account that is free forever. The other pays £5 for a product that costs £14.99 a month.

The second one looks like the better deal sitting on the page. It is the one that leaves you out of pocket.

Experian Free Account: £9 cashback. Cost to you: nothing. Experian CreditExpert: £5 cashback, paid only "once the first payment has been made". Cost to you: £14.99. Net: +£9 against −£9.99.

Disclosure: cashback links are affiliate links. Free for you, they fund the testing. Rates below were read off the live pages on 20 September 2026 — I hadn't claimed the £9 myself when this went up, so there's no receipt on this page yet. When it tracks, the screenshot goes here like on every other page.

The £9 offer: free account, free forever, £9 back

Experian's free account is exactly what it says. You get your Experian credit score and the report behind it, you can check it as often as you like without denting it, and there is no card to enter and nothing to cancel. TopCashback pays £9 on top, tagged Exclusive on the day I looked.

The conditions are short:

  • New Experian customers only. If you already have an account, this one isn't for you.
  • Click through from TopCashback and finish in the same session. No voucher codes that TopCashback hasn't approved, or the cashback gets declined.
  • If it doesn't track, you have 100 days from signing up to file a missing cashback claim.

That's the whole play. A free product, £9 for opening it, nothing to cancel.

Your score, on the scale most articles still get wrong

Experian UK scores you out of 1250, not the 999 that half the internet still quotes. The bands:

Band Score
Excellent 1121 to 1250
Very Good 1001 to 1120
Good 861 to 1000
Fair 641 to 860
Very Poor 0 to 640

If a guide tells you 999 is a perfect Experian score, it was written against the old scale and hasn't been touched since.

If you've just moved to the UK, your file is empty

This is the part that catches people out. Your credit history does not travel. Years of perfect repayments in Lahore, Lagos, Warsaw or Mumbai mean nothing to a UK lender, because UK credit reference agencies only hold UK data. You land, and on paper you are nobody. Google's own "people also ask" box has a name for it: ghost credit.

What it costs you in practice:

  • Phone contracts. Networks credit check. No file means refusal, or a deposit, or being pushed to pay-as-you-go. This is usually the first wall people hit, and it's why the SIM-only route matters when you're new.
  • Renting. Letting agents run tenant referencing. No UK file usually means a UK guarantor, or six months' rent up front.
  • Cards and finance. Refused, or offered at rates built for people with bad history rather than no history.

None of that is a judgment on how you handle money. It's an absence of data. The fix starts with looking at the file, which is free, and which is where the £9 comes in.

I landed in January 2023 and spent my first months learning this the slow way. The full story of what that cost me and what I've clawed back since is a separate page.

The £5 offer, and the line in the terms

CreditExpert is Experian's paid subscription. The TopCashback listing calls it "Get a Free Credit Report and Score at CreditExpert*", and the asterisk is doing heavy lifting. Straight from the terms on the page:

"Free for 30 days, then it's £14.99 a month... New customers only. Cashback to be paid out after 30 days, once the first payment for Credit Expert has been made."

Read that twice. The £5 does not arrive when you sign up. It arrives after the free trial ends and Experian has taken £14.99 off you. Collect the cashback and you are £9.99 down.

When it's worth taking: you actually want what CreditExpert does — score and report updated daily, alerts when something changes, a breakdown of everything you owe — and you were going to pay for it anyway. Then £5 back is a small discount on your first month.

When it isn't: you're signing up to "get a free credit report" and planning to cancel inside 30 days. That's a perfectly sensible thing to do, but cancel and you get no cashback, so don't count the £5 as part of the deal. And if you forget to cancel, you've paid £14.99 to earn £5.

What actually builds a UK file from nothing

In order, cheapest first:

  1. Register to vote. The electoral roll is how lenders confirm you live where you say you live. It's free and it's the single highest-return admin job on this list.
  2. A UK current account at a stable address.
  3. A phone or SIM plan in your name. A rolling SIM you pay monthly is a credit relationship. It reports.
  4. Utilities or broadband in your name rather than only in a housemate's.
  5. A credit-builder card last, not first. Small spend, paid in full every month, never near the limit.

Notice the order. Search "how to build credit score UK" and almost every result is a lender, and every lender starts you at step five, because step five is the thing they sell. Steps one to four cost nothing.

Three bureaux, three different scores

There isn't one UK credit score. There are three files, and lenders pick which to check:

Agency Scale See it free via
Experian 0 to 1250 Experian free account (the £9 offer)
Equifax 0 to 1000 ClearScore
TransUnion 0 to 710 Credit Karma

This is why your friend's score looks wildly different to yours. Different agencies, different data, different maths. You also have a legal right to a statutory credit report from each agency for free, which shows the underlying data without any subscription attached.

How long it takes

Roughly, from an empty file:

  • 3 months: the file exists but is thin. Expect deposits and refusals still.
  • 6 months: basic products start opening up.
  • 12 months: you look like a normal applicant.

Anyone promising to take you from nothing to Excellent in a month is selling something.

FAQ

Does cashback affect your credit score? No. Cashback sites don't run credit searches, and getting paid £9 for opening an Experian account leaves no mark. What can leave a mark is the product you apply for afterwards — a credit card application is a hard search, opening Experian's free account is not.

Is the Experian free report really free? The free account is genuinely free and has no end date. What isn't free is CreditExpert, which is the £14.99-a-month product with a 30-day trial in front of it. Both live on Experian's site, which is where the confusion comes from.

Is there a free Experian account, or has it all gone paid? There is still a free one. TopCashback's own listing copy calls it "free forever".

Can an international student in the UK get a credit card? Sometimes, but usually not a mainstream one in the first year. Student accounts at UK banks are the realistic route, and credit-builder cards after a few months of UK footprint.

What credit score do I need for a phone contract? There's no published number, and each network sets its own bar. What matters more than the number is having any file at all, plus a UK address history and a bank account the direct debit can come from.

Will I pass a rental credit check with no UK history? Often not on your own, which is why agents ask newcomers for a guarantor or rent up front. Being on the electoral roll and having a few months of UK account history helps more than the score itself.

How do I cancel CreditExpert? Through your Experian account settings or their customer service, any time during or after the trial. Cancel inside 30 days and you pay nothing — and you also get no cashback, because the cashback is conditional on that first payment.

Why is my ClearScore higher than my Experian score? Because ClearScore shows Equifax data on a 0 to 1000 scale and Experian uses its own 0 to 1250 scale. They aren't comparable numbers, and neither is "the" score.

The short version

Take the £9. It's a free product, the cashback is real, and looking at your file is the first sensible thing to do whether you landed last month or have been here forever.

Leave the £5 unless you genuinely want to pay £14.99 a month for CreditExpert. The cashback is real there too — it just costs more than it pays.
